Clifden Dental is delighted to offer anti-wrinkle injections to our patients. These treatments temporarily relax the muscles and help improve the appearance of fine lines in the upper face giving a fresher and more youthful appearance.
The areas we commonly treat are:
- Forehead Lines
- Frown Lines (between the eyes)
- Ccrows Feet (the sides of the eyes).
Following treatment the results are noticeable within a few days and last form three to six months.
Side effects are minimal, but like any procedure involving puncturing of the skin there can be redness at injection sites which resolves in a few hours and occasional bruising which resolves in a few days. Otherwise, Botulinum toxin type A (Botox) is remarkably safe.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do Anti-Wrinkle Injections work?
Treatment involves a very small amount of a specific purified protein produced by the Clostridium Botulinum Bacterium (Botulinum Toxin Type A) which is injected using a very fine needle into the muscles of the face. Botulinum Toxin Type A inhibits the transmission of neurotransmitter from nerve to muscle -hence stopping the muscle from contracting and forming wrinkles.
Approximately 3-10 days after treatment the skin above the injected muscles becomes nice and smooth.
If used early enough the Anti-Wrinkle Injections can prevent the formation of wrinkles altogether.
The treatment is relatively painless and you will be able to continue almost immediately with your normal activity.
Are there any instruction after anti-wrinkle treatment?
Do not touch or rub the treated area for one hour after treatment to avoid spreading the toxin into non-targeted muscles. Avoid applying make-up for at lest 12 hours.
How will I look when the effect of the anti-wrinkle injections wears off?
Your face will simply return to its previous appearance.
After a number of years of using Botox if you stop using it your muscles will have learned to relax on their own and you may not need or wish to continue using it.
Is anti-Wrinkle treatment safe?
Botulinum Toxin Type A is an approved prescription drug. Botox (one of the trade names of the drug) is actually manufactured in Ireland by Allergan and has been used safely for over 30 years in adults and even young children to treat many medical conditions requiring relaxation of overactive muscles.
Medical conditions which use Botox include:
- Cervical Dystonia
- Chronic Migraine
- Bladder Dysfunction
- Myofacial Pain Syndrome
- Excessive sweating
When used medically the doses are actually much higher and more frequent than when used for cosmetic reasons.
Botox has become a popular treatment for reversing the visible signs of aging by relaxing the muscles which cause the wrinkles to form. It’s safety is well established however as with any prescription drug there are potential side effects:
- Bruising, swelling or pain at injection site
- Drooping of eyelids (Ptosis)
- Arching of eyebrow
- Double vision, blurring of vision
- Treatment may not work, everyone is different
All of the above problems are temporary and resolve within a few hours to a few weeks.
Allergic reaction to Botox could also occur although it is extremely rare.
